About Harlingen, TX

Education in Harlingen, TX

Harlingen is served by HISD and STISD. Harlingen has four high schools: Early College High School, Harlingen High School, Harlingen High School South, and Harlingen School of Health Professions. Saint Anthony Catholic School serves K-8 (with a Montessori program for 3- and 4-year-olds). One of Harlingen's few Catholic schools, it has 220 students.


Harlingen's Marine Military Academy is an all-male, private college prep school. In 1967, TSTC opened a branch in Harlingen. The two-year technical state institution has around 5,000 students and 30 programs.


In 2002, UT Health San Antonio opened the RAHC Medical Education Division in Harlingen. In 2012, the UT System Board of Regents approved the merger of UT Brownsville and UT-Pan American to become UTRGV and UTRGV School of Medicine, which uses RAHC funding.


The UTRGV School of Medicine received its first students in 2016.

Harlingen houses UTRGV's psychiatry and neuroscience programs. Harlingen has a SCI campus.

Sports & Recreation in Harlingen, TX

Harlingen hosted the Rio Grande Valley White Wings from 1994 to 2003 and 2006 to 2015.


Greyhounds race at Valley Race Park. First Greyhound track in Texas to offer parimutuel betting. The grandstands are about 80,000 square feet and entirely air-conditioned (7,400 m2). The grandstand boasts 400 monitors to pick up 50+ Simulcast Live Racing transmissions from leading US Greyhound and horse racetrack. Valley Race Park closed in 1995 and reopened in 2000.


Hugh Ramsey Nature Park
is home  to the World Birding Center. Hugh Ramsey Nature Park is designing a new 7,250-square-foot visitors' center. Two-story complex will have gift store, observation tower, meeting rooms, and viewing spaces. Both Ramsey Park and the Thicket have parking, trails, maps, and restrooms.


Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival attracts 3,000 people each November. The 25th annual festival had 600 participants, 80 to 90 paid guides, and 100 volunteers. 10,000-capacity


Harlingen's J. Lewis Boggus Stadium boasts an all-weather artificial field. For football, soccer, and other outdoor sports.

Healthcare in Harlingen, TX

Harlingen Medical Center (HMC) is a national hospital. HMC offers bariatric, cardiac surgery, cardiology, emergency, gastroenterology, imaging services, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, orthopedic surgery, pediatrics, sleep apnea treatment, vascular and endovascular surgery, and wound-healing care. The 112-bed facility opened in 2002.


VBMC is the Rio Grande Valley's only Level II Trauma Center. Valley Baptist serves as the region's premier trauma center and is the only hospital to offer extensive stroke services, including endovascular neurology. Valley Baptist has Harlingen's only newborn ICU, Cameron County's only pediatric ICU, private labor/delivery/recovery suites, a family-centered maternity-care facility, women's surgery suites, day surgery, and outpatient services. Valley Baptist features a diabetes-education program, a wound-care clinic, and a surgical and medical weight-loss program.


Solara Specialty Hospital Harlingen is a long-term acute-care facility where patients can be treated for a month. Solara Healthcare, Valley Baptist Health System, and local physicians own the 41-bed facility.


The Regional Academic Health Center is an extension campus of UT Health San Antonio.
