After the 1980s, and especially since the adoption of NAFTA in 1994, economic activity has switched from agricultural to foreign trade, health care, retail, and tourism.


The FTZ is south of McAllen, between McAllen and Reynosa. In 1973, it was the first inland foreign-trade zone in the US. A FTZ station at McAllen Miller International Airport helps with air cargo. Under U.S., Mexican, and NAFTA legislation, FTZs provide manufacturers cost-saving opportunities. The FTZ is duty-free. South Texas College's five campuses in Hidalgo and Starr counties and eSTC virtual campus have more than 27,000 students. McAllen is headquarters.


McAllen, Valley View, and Sharyland school districts serve much of the city. McAllen has two elementary schools in the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District. McAllen's school districts include Hidalgo and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo.


South Texas Independent School District citizens can apply to magnet schools. Our Lady of Sorrows School is run by the Catholic Diocese of Brownsville.
